Backpack Program

Providing food over the weekend enhances academic performance, particularly in reading and math for younger, economically disadvantaged students.

It has been documented that weekend nourishment improves school performance.

Over a quarter of New Hampshire's student population qualifies for and utilizes the National School Lunch Program for free or reduced-price meals, but when the bell rings on Friday afternoon, many of these children will eat little again until breakfast at school on Monday morning. Approximately 43% of the students in our local school district are food insecure. The FOFC Backpack Program aims to end weekend hunger for our children. Students in need will be sent home with a backpack filled with healthy food (three dinners, two breakfasts, two lunches, and two snacks).

Typical Weekend Backpack Contents:

Breakfast: Oatmeal, granola bars, cereal.
Lunch/Dinner: Mac and cheese, canned soup, tuna, peanut butter and jelly.
Snacks: Fruit cups, pudding, crackers
